When I started practising meditation in the 1970s, it was fashionable.
Everyone was meditating.
The advertising for the seminars usually suggested that by the end of the weekend you would be totally enlightened.
I remember once going to a party that looked like a normal party - people talking and laughing - and in the middle sat a woman with a strange expression, her eyes closed, her face serene, totally unrelated to the whole scene.
Someone came up to me and said: 'Look at her, she is enlightened', and I thought: 'If this is enlightenment, I don't want it'.
What I wanted, at least for a while, were exotic powers.
I heard extraordinary stories of people who could bilocate or levitate.
Sometimes, as I sat on my pillow and felt an unusual lightness in my body, I imagined I was about to levitate.
I hoped I would succeed.
I thought I would get up off the pillow and float in the air.
I think I was also influenced by a story my grandfather used to tell about my grandmother, a woman who died when I was nine years old.
I knew her as a sickly old woman, but my grandfather remembered her as the beautiful woman he had married when he was eighteen.
He told me she was so beautiful that she 'glowed in the dark'.
I asked him if he really thought that, and he replied:
"Yes, he meant it".
He told me: 'At my nephew Murray's wedding, the hall was lit by gas because there was no electricity yet, so it was quite dark, and everyone said:
"Look at Fischel's wife, she glows in the dark!".
I kept it as a wonderful memory and as an ideal.
What I wanted to achieve from my meditation practice was to shine in the dark.
I think many of us wanted magic in the beginning.
My Buddhist meditation teachers, whom I met in 1977, talked about enlightenment but not magic.
They talked about 'seeing clearly' and how this could mean happiness and an end to suffering.
It sounded like the kind of magic I most wanted.

What I do pass on to people is that the truth of our suffering never goes away.
When people are looking for escape then coming to a meditation retreat is the wrong place.
What can happen when committing to a disciplined spiritual practice is that we have the possibility to establish a more conscious relation with our suffering.
In establishing this more conscious relation with our suffering, not rejecting it or allowing it to control us, our relation to that suffering changes.
For example, I haven’t slept more than 2 hours consecutively in any night since 1966.
This reality used to be a terrible experience for me, because I was locked into the idea that I have to sleep in a certain way.
When I was at a point of awareness that came as a result of not using intoxicants and having a disciplined spiritual practice rooted in self reflection, I suddenly became conscious of the simple fact that I can’t sleep; or rather it is not that I can’t sleep but the more simple reflection of this is now how I sleep.
Once there was acceptance that my sleep patterns are like they are, then there was the opportunity for another relation to that suffering to show itself.
As long as I cling to the idea that I want my suffering, whatever it is, to go away, I make myself a prisoner to that suffering.
It will continue to pull me down into the pit of despair.
It is important to learn to be sad.
It is equally important to learn not to swim in a pool of sadness, but to learn how to be sad.
It is important to learn how to be happy.
We have too many ideas about what happiness is, what peace is.
However, we can come to a place where we just can let go of these ideas.
Once we have loosened our grip on our ideas, at this point, we then have the opportunity to experience happiness and peace.

Sometimes rebuilding yourself means completely tearing yourself down.
Tearing down the idea you had of yourself, what you thought you wanted, the life you tried so hard to hold together. Yes, it hurts.
Starting over isn’t something simple or motivating at first.
It’s a confusing, chaotic, lonely process.
You might feel like a stranger in your own life, as if nothing you once believed in makes sense anymore.
But this isn’t a failure; this is the beginning.
Letting everything come crashing down is sometimes the only way to understand what’s truly real.
You don’t need to rush to put every piece back together; you just need to stay there amongst the rubble, learn, and choose what deserves to remain in your life.

E, onestamente, forse avete ragione.

The billionaire on his private jet feels nostalgic for the old days.
The millionaire in first class dreams of owning a jet of his own.
The entrepreneur in his sports car wants to become a millionaire.
The employee with a car dreams of a sports car.
The unemployed man on his bicycle would just like a job and a car.
The pedestrian would like at least a bicycle.
The paralysed man who would give anything just to be able to walk again.
And then there’s the terminally ill person, whose only wish is to be healthy again.
You see, there’s always another level, another goal to pursue, another ‘if only’ standing between you and happiness.
But if you don’t learn to appreciate what you have right now, you’ll spend your whole life chasing what comes next, without ever realising that someone else is dreaming of exactly the life you’re already living.
Happiness doesn’t lie in having more; it lies in learning to be grateful.
For what is already yours.

The most beautiful quality in a person is not their eyes, nor their lips; it has nothing to do with outward appearance.
The most beautiful quality of all is a kind heart.
Kindness is the most beautiful because it can be seen even by those who cannot see.
And it can be felt even by those who cannot hear.
A person with a kind heart has the brightest smile and the most infectious laugh, because when they smile, they lighten the atmosphere; when they laugh, they light up the whole room. Kindness dispels evil just as light dispels darkness, but kindness does not mean saying ‘yes’ to everything.
Being kind means knowing how to say no to what hurts you and to what hurts others.
It means making people who have always felt invisible and misunderstood in such a harsh and cruel world feel heard, listened to, understood and seen. Kindness is not weakness; it is the strongest act a human being can perform.

Try looking at the world from this perspective.
If you have food in the fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75 per cent of the world’s population.
If you have money to spend as you please and the freedom to go wherever you want, you are among the wealthiest 18 per cent of people in the world.
If you’re alive and in good health today, you’re luckier than a million people who won’t survive the end of the week.
If you can read, look at and understand this message, you’re luckier than 3 billion people in the world who cannot access the knowledge and information that surrounds us.
Life isn’t meant for complaining about pain and difficulties.
It’s meant for prioritising the things that matter.

The one thing you need to do to grow is the thing you’re most afraid of doing.
Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life.
Moving at a snail’s pace is still progress, and slow progress is better than no progress at all.
Never stand still and never give up.
It’s easy to think that if you can’t completely change your life in one go, you might as well do nothing at all.
Change brings rivers of tears, feelings of helplessness and despair.
But it is precisely during this transition that we build our strength and our happiness.
Life changes suddenly.
One moment it seems as though there is no hope, no way out.
And the next moment, the whole world opens up before you.
