When someone says or does something that makes us angry, we suffer and then we tend to react by trying to make them suffer in turn, in the hope that this will reduce our personal suffering.
We think: "I want to punish you. I want to make you suffer because you made me suffer: when I see you really suffer I will feel better'.

The fact is that when you make the other suffer, he in turn will seek relief by making you suffer even more: the result is an exponential growth of suffering on both sides.
On the contrary, you both need compassion and help, not punishment.
When you get angry, return to yourself and take care of your anger.
When someone hurts you, return to yourself and take care of your pain, your anger.
Don't say anything, don't do anything: whatever you say or do when you are angry could damage your relationship with the other person even more.
Most of us do not behave this way.
We have no desire to go back to ourselves, we feel like running after the other person to teach them a lesson.
If your house is on fire, the first thing you should do is try to put out the fire, not run after the person you think started it.
While you chase the alleged arsonist your house will end up destroyed by flames.
This is not wise!
You must head for the house and try to put out the fire.
The same applies when you get angry:
if you continue to interact with the other person, to argue with him, if you try to punish him, you act just like one who runs after the arsonist while all his possessions go up in smoke.
