⚡️🇹🇷🇮🇶 — Türkiye said the Başika-Zilkan base, used by the Turkish Armed Forces since 2015 at the request of Iraqi authorities in the fight against ISIS, will be gradually handed over to Baghdad under an agreed mechanism and timeline as Iraqi security measures in Sinjar advance. Ankara welcomed steps by the Iraqi central government to strengthen state authority in Sinjar, assessing they could support normalization, security and stability, and a terror-free environment, while reaffirming continued support for Iraq through military capacity-building, counterterrorism expertise-sharing, training and defence-industry cooperation.
➡️ Iraqi Prime Minister Al Zaidi said October 1, 2026 marks the start of a roadmap to address weapons outside state control, with agreed timelines not extending beyond June 30, 2027, and reaffirmed that decisions on war and peace belong to Iraq’s constitutional authorities. He said the government would fully disarm non-Iraqi armed groups operating on Iraqi territory, prevent Iraqi territory or airspace from being used for actions threatening neighbouring states, and reject the use of other states’ territory or airspace for attacks on Iraq.
Baghdad also plans to procure a complete air-defence system to strengthen national air sovereignty and advance legislation governing the Popular Mobilization Forces, formally integrating them into the state security structure under the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
