Calgary council rammed through a national-unity statement 14-1, without even bothering to debate it first, as reported. Mayor Jeromy Farkas says Alberta outside Canada risks capital flight and could end up as the 51st state. Funny how the political class only starts waving the maple leaf when Ottawa’s arrangement is threatened, not when Ottawa strangles Alberta with regulations, equalization distortions, and endless sovereignty bleed to global bureaucrats.

This is the real contradiction: the same establishment that tolerated Trudeau-era humiliation of the West now demands instant civic obedience in the name of unity. Not unity built on fair treatment, but unity as managerial discipline. Coun. Mike Jamieson was the lone no vote because council should not divide residents, while Landon Johnston called the move a mayoral performance. He is not wrong. City hall cannot fix affordability, budgets, or social decay, but it can issue a sanctimonious statement on command. Team Canada always shows up right on time to lecture Albertans, never to respect them.
