Canada now has a 136,000-application citizenship backlog and a 33-month wait because Bill C-3 lets people dig up a Canadian ancestor from generations ago and claim the prize. Even U.S. church archives are getting swamped: a two-person archive in Lafayette, Louisiana got 1,350 requests, with waits jumping from two to three days to 12 to 16 weeks, as reported. More than half of the 6,635 new citizenship certificates issued under C-3 went to people born in the United States.

This is what post-national governance looks like: borders for taxpayers, loopholes for paperwork aristocrats. Lena Metlege Diab said she did not expect a flood. Of course she did not. Ottawa never expects the consequences of its own ideology. While Canadians get housing shortages, service collapse and identity dilution, the state is busy turning ancestry hobbyists into instant passport holders with work and residency rights. Citizenship is supposed to mean loyalty, attachment and shared national life, not a scavenger hunt through Louisiana baptism records.
