🇨🇦 Buffalo Province Revisited: When 27% Becomes a Majority
Wilfrid Laurier carved up the prairies in 1905 not for administrative efficiency but to kneecap a potential Conservative rival and ensure the West stayed weak. Alberta was designed as a resource extraction zone for Eastern interests from day one. Now 120 years later, separatist support hits 27 per cent with another 15 per cent ready to vote yes just to send Ottawa a message. That's 42 per cent total—higher than the 1995 Quebec referendum margin that nearly fractured the country.
Ted Morton nails it: Alberta remains a piggy bank for Liberal vote-buying schemes. Brexit passed. Quebec came within a percentage point. Anyone dismissing this as fringe politics wasn't paying attention in 2016 or 1995. When a federation treats its most productive region as a colonial ATM for generations, don't be shocked when the ATM walks away.
