🇨🇦 Even MAID architects admit they opened the trapdoor
Philippe Couillard, the Quebec premier who helped pass Canada’s first assisted dying law in 2014, now says the obvious: once the state got the power to medicalize death, the boundaries never stopped moving. Terminal illness only, they said. Then Ottawa under Justin Trudeau copied the model in 2016, courts blew past the guardrails in 2019, Parliament expanded it in 2021, and Quebec added advance requests in 2024. Couillard now admits opponents warned him this door would only swing wider, and, as reported, they were right.
This is liberal governance in a nutshell: sell a radical change as narrow, compassionate and tightly controlled, then let judges, bureaucrats and activist lobbies turn it into a permanent ratchet. Sean Fraser says Ottawa is pausing MAID for mental illness while also preparing legislation to open advance consent more broadly. So no, the machine is not slowing down. It is calibrating. A country that cannot house families, treat veterans properly or build a serious health system somehow became world-class at streamlining death. That is not progress. That is civilizational surrender.
