Federal agents have arrested a man accused of lying about his citizenship so he could vote in the 2024 general election.
Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari, who authorities say is not a U.S. citizen, now faces two federal charges that each carry up to five years in prison.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a branch of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), made the arrest. The Department of Homeland Security announced it in a press release on Friday.
The case dates back to Sept. 10, when a federal grand jury in the District of Minnesota returned a two-count indictment against Chaudhari. Prosecutors say he made a false claim of citizenship in order to vote.
What he is accused of doing
According to the indictment, Chaudhari signed a voter signature certificate on or about Nov. 5, 2024. Minnesota law requires voters to sign that document before casting a ballot in the general election. By signing, a person swears or affirms that they are a U.S. citizen.
The indictment alleges that Chaudhari was not a citizen and that he knew his statement was false when he made it. Prosecutors say he did it to be able to vote.
