One source told Politico that the appearance was a "sanctioned hit" on Zacharia, who wasn't Wiles' preferred pick for the job. Multiple reports suggest Zacharia's performance during the Hannity interview played a significant role in her firing.

President Trump reportedly offered Zacharia the press secretary role without informing Wiles, who was blindsided by the decision. Other reports say Wiles had spent weeks courting CNN commentator Scott Jennings for the position.
