The Unpriced Discipline

To evaluate knowledge, its distribution, and its consumption through a market lens, one must first establish the key value scientific activities, and discoveries. In other words, where is the market?

In classical economic, price reflects, scarcity: physical resources are rivalrous, meaning two parties cannot consume or utilize the exact sane tangible object simultaneously without conflict.

In contrast, ideas, information, and knowledge are not rivalrous. If I know differentiation, it doesn't prevent you from knowing it. This simple observation shows that "to know" is not a capital on its own.

Consequently, when intellectual property laws or paywalls impose a price on ideas, they create an artificial scarcity to simulate standard market behavior. Any free-market or libertarian critique of the scientific enterprise must confront this paradox. If the underlying product—knowledge itself—cannot naturally be priced, we must look deeper to determine where the true market operates.

Therefore, to evaluate knowledge, its distribution, and its consumption through a market lens, one must first recognize that the fundamental unit of value is not knowledge itself, but the velocity of its acquisition.

In classical terms, knowledge is non-rivalrous and non-scarce; a theory can be shared infinitely without diminishing in substance. However, this static view misses where the actual market cleared: in temporal priority and informational proximity.

In research and development, value is highly time-sensitive. Possessing an insight six months before the wider community offers a decisive advantage—whether in commercializing technology, securing priority of discovery, or directing subsequent research vectors.
