🌎 A Legacy of Peace: The United Nations and the Nobel Prize

🔸For eight decades, the United Nations has stood as the world's defence for peace, engaging countries and communities across every continent. Its mission is an enduring pledge: to prevent and end conflict and violence, champion human rights and forge the foundational path toward a future that is secure, prosperous and sustainable for everyone.

🔸Its resolve is anchored by a fundamental truth, articulated by Secretary-General Ant√≥nio Guterres: "Power does not reside in the hands of those who dominate or divide. Real power rises from people ‚Äì from our shared resolve to uphold dignity."

🔸As the United Nations, representing 193 countries and 8 billion people, marks its 80th anniversary, we honor its legacy.

🌎 High Commissioner Türk: The clock on AI regulation is ticking
🔸05 October 2026

I welcome the opportunity to address this important AI and Human Rights Summit, which is focused on how to make sure human ingenuity is in step with human rights.

The ruthless race for AI and the competition that we see have brought us into uncharted waters, with mounting concerns about human agency, our safety, and even our continued existence as a species.

AI has the potential to deliver head-spinning advances across science, education, healthcare, agriculture, public services – and human rights. AI agents can improve our work, organize our days, and take over routine tasks. They can actually also help us give aspiration to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and how we can ensure that it’s implemented.

🔷 At a time of profound strain on the international legal order, the Republic of South Africa and Malaysia convened the High-Level Meeting in Defence of International Law at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 25 September 2026.

🔷 The meeting brought together 40 States, represented by Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ministers of Justice and senior diplomats, alongside representatives of intergovernmental organisations and international legal experts, to consider a fundamental question: how can States act collectively to ensure that international law is not merely proclaimed, but enforced, and that the institutions entrusted with upholding it are protected from efforts to undermine their independence and effective functioning?

🔷 Participants advanced a series of concrete proposals to strengthen the implementation and enforcement of international law. These included consideration of a new United Nations mechanism, drawing upon the experience of the Special Committee against Apartheid, to monitor implementation, report on compliance and facilitate coordinated action among States; continued efforts towards a United Nations Security Council arms embargo on Israel; and coordinated measures to protect the International Criminal Court, its judges and officials from threats, sanctions and intimidation.

🌎 38 Global Civil Society Organizations File Joint Brief in US Lawsuit Challenging Legality of Trump’s ICC Sanctions

♦️The Trump administration’s escalating campaignopens in a new tab against the International Criminal Court (ICC) is reaching far beyond the judges, prosecutors, and human rights groups it has sanctioned, chilling civil society engagement with the Court and undermining victims’ access to justice, Amnesty International, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), and 36 other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) said today.

♦️On September 23, 2026, 38 civil society groups jointly filed an amicus curiae (‘friend of the court’) brief with the US District Court for the Southern District of New York in support of a lawsuit filed by the American Friends Service Committee, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Human Rights Watch, and the Open Society Institute, which challenges the legality of sanctions imposed under Executive Order (EO) 14203. The sanctions have targeted ICC prosecutors and judges, a UN human rights expert, and three Palestinian human rights groups.

♦️The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on 36 entities tied to Iran’s aviation sector, adding them to the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List.

♦️The designations target 27 Iranian airlines and aviation related entities, as well as foreign companies accused of providing cargo, logistics, procurement and other support to Iran’s aviation industry. Treasury says the sector is used by Tehran to move weapons, personnel and illicit cargo.

♦️The action is part of the Trump administration’s broader “Operation Economic Outcast” campaign to further isolate Iran economically.
