📰 MacOS 26 will be macOS Tahoe

👂 Mark Gurman follows up on his earlier news that Apple’s operating systems will switch to new-style numbering by saying the new Mac update will be Lake Tahoe-themed.

🐌 With just one more week to go before WWDC25, he’s also suggesting this will be a “gap year” for Apple’s AI ambitions, with projects like LLM Siri, a true ChatGPT competitor, and an Apple Intelligence-enhanced version of its Shortcuts app still in development but possibly not ready for a preview.

🍏 Innovation is innovation – “26” instead of “19”

📰 Apple plans to change the naming system for its operating systems starting in 2025.

ℹ️ Instead of the traditional version sequence, where numbers will increase annually, updates will be labeled according to the year of release. For example, iOS 19 will be renamed iOS 26, and macOS and other platforms will also follow this principle.

👂 The information about the changes is provided by Mark Gurman, citing anonymous sources. The new naming system will affect all Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro headset. The goal of the changes is to unify the user interface across all of the company's devices.

🔜 The announcement of the innovations is expected at the WWDC25 conference on June 9. What new features to expect:
・Round icons;
・Improved multitasking on iPad, bringing its functionality closer to macOS.

Apple is not the first company to switch to annual labeling. Samsung previously implemented a similar approach for its Galaxy line. At the same time, Apple intends to use numbering that is one year ahead of the current year, which is similar to the practice of car manufacturers.

🎮 New app to replace Game Center

That's it, the Tim Cook news block is finally over and now we can discuss the upcoming iOS 19 and macOS 16 announcement.

📰 Apple is planning to release a dedicated app for video games on its devices, which will be preinstalled on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV later this year.

ℹ️ The app will serve as a launcher for titles, centralize in-game achievements, leaderboards, communications, and other activity, and feature editorial content, access to the App Store's game section, and promotion of Arcade.

🪙 The app will replace Game Center and is part of Apple's push to enhance the gaming experience on its devices, that currently generate about two-thirds of App Store revenue from games and in-app purchases.

🤥 No longer pipe, no longer dance

📰 The NewYorkTimes explains that prior to President Trump's recent trip to the Middle East, the White House invited many U.S. company executives to join him. However, Apple CEO declined the invite, which seemed to upset Mr. Trump.

😤 During his trip, Trump praised other CEOs for attending, but took aim at Tim Cook for not being there. Later, in Qatar, Trump criticized Cook for Apple's investments in India.

🧐 Despite their previous positive relationship, Tim is now facing increased scrutiny and pressure from the administration on Apple's manufacturing decisions. Apple's market value has soared under Cook's leadership, but the company is facing challenges, including recent court cases and delays in product releases.

💸 Apple has tried to navigate the administration's demands by promising more investments in the US, but Mr. Trump is pushing for iPhones to be made domestically. Mr. Cook hasn’t responded publicly.

🪙 It is cheaper to pay than to move

📱 Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that it is more profitable for Apple to cover 25% tariff on iPhone imports to the United States than to launch production domestically.

🏭 According to him, even such significant tariffs are not comparable to the costs and logistical difficulties that would entail moving the entire assembly infrastructure from Asia to America.

🇨🇳 🇻🇳 🇮🇳 Today, most iPhones are made in China, Vietnam and India. The latter, by the way, is becoming an increasingly important part of Apple's supply chain. However, the Trump administration insists on manufacturing in the United States.

⌚️ Apple Watch was at the bottom of the sea for about half a year

🐚 When they were found, they were fully functional. The watch only needed to be cleaned of barnacles. Then they were plugged into the charger, and they turned on.

💬 The redditor who found the device was shocked and decided to order an Apple gadget for the first time.

😁 You can't think of a better promo.

🇺🇸 President Donald Trump demanded Apple make their phones in the US or face a 25% tariff

I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S. Thank your for your attention to this matter!

🙅‍♂️ Apple stops work on Apple Watch with a camera planned for 2027

📰 Apple is no longer planning to release an Apple Watch that includes a camera, reports Bloomberg. Apple was developing Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra models that had a camera to view the wearer's surrounding environment, but work on those projects ended this week.

👁️ The camera in Apple Watch would not have been used for FaceTime or photos, but instead would have allowed owners to get information about objects and places near them with Visual Intelligence.

🎧 Nevertheless Apple is still developing AirPods with tiny cameras inside. The AirPods cameras may be infrared sensors to enable features like enhanced spatial audio, in-air gesture control, and AI capabilities.

🥴 iPhone 17 Air could get a battery like iPhone 12

If Asian insiders are right, its capacity will be only ~2800 mAh.

🤔 Perhaps for the new smartphone Apple will make a high-density battery and the capacity will slightly increase – by 15-20%. Or they will present a removable battery case especially for the release of the iPhone 17 Air.

💬 Is the thinnest iPhone in the upcoming lineup starting to get frustrating?

🇪🇺 iPhones will be allowed to set third-party voice assistant as default in the EU

📰 As Mark Gurman reports, Apple will have to introduce a feature to support third-party voice assistants under pressure from EU authorities to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

🔍 So iPhone users will be able to set, for example, Google Assistant as the default voice assistant and invoke it with the side button instead of Siri.

💭 It will also be possible to put a voice assistant based on ChatGPT. Right now, Siri as part of Apple Intelligence is able to relay verbal requests to ChatGPT, but with the introduction of the new feature, it will be possible to remove Siri from this chain and address ChatGPT directly.

🤫 When exactly Apple will prepare this feature for release is still unknown. But the company will definitely not present it with pomp, and will announce it quietly, as it seeks to preserve its own services.

📍 Also, don't expect this feature to be available anywhere outside of the EU (at least not before other countries start dictating their own terms to Apple).

🤖 Apple faced a shortage of powerful GPUs for AI training last year

All because of competitors like Amazon and Microsoft buying up resources.

📰 As Bloomberg reports, this is what has slowed the development of Apple Intelligence and LLM.

🐌 Apple also adheres to strict privacy standards, which limits access to real user data, unlike competitors (like Google). As a result, Apple uses synthetic data created by third-party vendors to train its AI. Recently, iPhones have started to help in this process, but Apple is overdue.

💪 Still, the company often prefers to wait for competitors to test the technology before introducing its own version, which has previously been successful with MP3 players, smartphones, and other products.
