Researchers have disclosed a new Spectre-v2 variant called Branch Target Reuse (BTR) that can extract Linux root password hashes from vulnerable Intel CPUs in minutes.
The attack recovered a root password hash in around 3 minutes on Raptor Cove and 5 minutes on Lion Cove CPUs.
Linux mitigations have already been merged for the vulnerability.
