🇺🇸⛴ US Navy’s F-35s aren’t even a decade old, already need pricey ‘mission planning’ upgrade

The Navy plans to spend $50-$100M to upgrade the software used for planning F-35 attack sorties and loading data into jets before takeoff.

👉 The upgrade means the existing software is either defective or inefficient/insufficient to support operations in modern combat environments.

The F-35’s offboard ground systems have a reputation for their laggy, buggy nature, with the Pentagon’s testing office previously highlighting the “high number” of manual workarounds needed to get the jet’s Autonomous Logistics Information System – a separate but related piece of ground-based infrastructure, to work properly.

➡️ In any event, what the new planned upgrade won’t fix is the F-35C’s single engine design – a nightmare for planners in its own right because if the aircraft malfunctions or is targeted during a mission, it will have less of a chance of being able to limp back to its carrier afterward.

In the grand scheme of things, $50-100M would actually be a bargain for a jet whose estimated lifetime cost has ballooned from $1.5T to $2.1T over the past decade and continues to climb.

It’s also not immediately clear what the US needs the upgraded software for. IRGC Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi revealed Sunday that US naval forces are now operating 1k+ km from Iran’s borders to avoid being targeted – which is effectively beyond the F-35C’s safe operating range.
