Moving to a new country comes with a ridiculous number of things to sort out.

Residence permits. Housing. Work. Dutch. Meeting people. Learning how everything works.

It’s easy to feel behind because you’re not dealing with all of it at once. But you don’t need to.

Focus on what matters now. Let the rest wait. That counts as progress too.

A Step Towards Freedom

In this episode of Bennu, Ben Brink and Charline Baker-Friesen speak with Shivangi Dhakad about what moving countries really changes.

Not just where you live, but how you think about freedom, work, identity, home and belonging.
Shivangi shares her move from India to the Netherlands, what she found here, what she still misses, and how her idea of home has changed over the years.

The conversation also touches on the pressure to fit in, slowing down, building community, and staying yourself while adapting to a new culture.

One idea sits at the heart of the episode:
You can respect the culture you move into without losing your own.

Bennu, Chapter Two, Episode 04
with Shivangi Dhakad, Hosted by Ben Brink and Charline Baker-Friesen

Starting over in a new country takes a lot of energy: Paperwork, language, uncertainty, new routines, new people.

Some days feel exciting. Some feel exhausting. Often both. That part counts too.

The talent is here. The transition is where things get lost.

New Nuffic figures show a useful pattern: international students face more friction in the first year, but those who continue often complete at strong rates. And after graduation, wanting to stay is still very different from being able to build a life here.

This week’s #Weekly_Signal looks at three transition points: settling in, getting through your studies, and what happens after graduation.

Swipe through the main numbers and the question we think matters most:

What could become the bottleneck in your #transition?

Where you work matters.
But so does where your life happens.

New WEF analysis based on BCG’s Cities of Choice research found a 30-point gap in job satisfaction between workers in high- and low-experience cities.

And even in IT, one of the most remote-friendly sectors, the gap was still 20 percentage points.

The takeaway is simple:
A good job may get people there.
A good life may help them stay.

One of our #Trusted_Partners, Magdalena Szumna, is launching the first beta edition of her Unwritten Rules Lab on 8 September.

It’s a small 90-minute session for professionals dealing with the kind of workplace situations that are hard to explain but difficult to ignore. Power dynamics, double standards, unclear expectations, or simply that feeling that something happened in the room that nobody is naming.

πŸ“Œ The group is limited to 6 people.
πŸ“Œ 8 September | 13:00–14:30 | €99

If it sounds relevant, you can contact Magdalena directly on LinkedIn or at magdalena@indogodiversity.com to secure a spot.

Sometimes it’s about figuring out where you fit, what gives you stability, how to make your value visible, and what to do next.

That’s what Flux Forward is here to help with: making the next step a little clearer for internationals in the Netherlands.

Sometimes the role is clear, but the route is not.

International talent does not just need an opportunity. It needs clarity on the next step.

If you hire internationals, make that next step easy to find.

This week’s #Weekly_Signal is about what can happen when one thing changes.

A job change can affect your residence timeline. Housing can affect your arrival and registration. And having the right skills does not always mean you can enter a profession straight away.

We also included three useful September dates for #internationals in the #Netherlands.

If something in your situation changes, it is worth asking: what do I need to check next?

If you lose your job while on a Highly Skilled Migrant permit, you may now have more time to find a new employer.

The maximum job-search period can be up to 6 months instead of 3 if:

β€’ your job ended on or after 22 May 2026
β€’ you have held this permit for at least 2 years
β€’ your residence permit is still valid

Your search period starts when your contract ends and cannot be longer than the validity of your permit.

Rules can depend on your situation, so always check the IND website for the latest information.

The first months in the Netherlands can be a lot. You are sorting out housing, paperwork, work, language and trying to build a life at the same time.

Simple things can feel heavier when everything is new.

Start with the part that needs your attention most.
