On Affirmative Action.
A few weeks ago, U.S. Supreme Court put an end to affirmative action in college admissions.
What is affirmative action to begin with? Affirmative Action is a policy that promotes equal opportunities to historically excluded groups. Colleges and universities employed affirmative action to diversify their student bodies by considering race as a contributing factor in the admissions process. However, most people misunderstand the whole idea of this policy. They often think that someone got accepted to a college just because they’re black or Hispanic, and call it unfair. In reality, it’s part of a holistic review, where race can be used as one factor among many others (GPA, SAT scores, ECs, Application, Interviews…) The end of affirmative action will now create social disparities among students.
There is another phenomenon called affirmative action for white people, which is legacy admissions. In legacy admissions, colleges give preferential treatment to the kids of rich donors and alumni. 25.5% of Princeton’s class of 2026 consists of legacy students, indicating at least one member from their family had previously attended Princeton. If we genuinely seek fair admissions, we should be going after legacy admissions first.
