Amerigo Vespucci: The Man Who Gave America Its Name

Amerigo Vespucci was born in 1454 in Florence, Italy, into a family of a notary. In his youth he worked for the Medici bank and later moved to Seville, where he began organizing ships for long voyages. At the end of the 15th century, Europeans were searching for a sea route to Asia, and Vespucci took part in several expeditions to the shores of the New World (approximately 1499–1504). Contrary to popular belief, he was not a ship’s captain — he served as a navigator, astronomer, and cartographer.

Vespucci’s main achievement was the scientific interpretation of the newly discovered lands. In his letters, he was the first to state that the territories found by Columbus were not India or Asia but a completely new continent, unknown to ancient geographers. He proposed calling it the “New World.” Thanks to his descriptions, the cartographer Martin Waldseemüller published a map in 1507 in which the new continent was named “America” — in honor of the Latinized form of Amerigo’s name (Americus Vespucius).

Vespucci died in 1512 in Seville, having served as Spain’s chief pilot. Today his name is borne not only by two continents but also by many geographical features. Although debates continue about how many expeditions he actually made and what he personally discovered, one thing is certain: it was Vespucci who first clearly articulated the idea that a separate part of the world existed.
