The passing of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Mousa Shubairi Zanjani now further highlights this generational transition. For decades, these senior scholars represented a living connection between different generations of the Qom Hawza and the major intellectual and political transformations of modern Shia history. As more members of this generation pass away, the composition of the Marja’iyyah will not inevitably change, and the relationship between the older generation of senior jurists, the emerging generation of scholars, and Iran’s political institutions will become increasingly important.

For anyone trying to understand Iran, the Shia world, or the internal structure of the Islamic Republic, the Maraji cannot simply be treated as elderly religious figures who occasionally issue statements. They constitute a major intellectual, jurisprudential, and religious institution whose influence has developed over generations and across the globe. The current period, particularly following the deaths of several senior Maraji and the extraordinary political developments surrounding the succession, therefore represents an important moment in the history of Qom and the wider Twelver Shia scholarly establishment.

There is therefore no reason to view the generational transition with concern. A new generation of Maraji is already emerging, and further names are likely to become more prominent in the coming years as the present generation reaches an advanced age. Given the ages of many of the current senior Maraji, the next decade could naturally bring significant changes and replacements. At the same time, several younger and middle-generation scholars are already active through their offices, teaching, research, and jurisprudential work, and some are increasingly recognized among students and followers.

Among the names that may become increasingly prominent are Ayatollah Mustafa Husayni Khamenei, the eldest son of Imam Ali Khamenei; Imam Mujtaba Husayni Khamenei, whose senior religious standing and position within the Hawza have already attracted significant attention and whose future recognition as a Marja’ have become more formally established; Ayatollah Seifi Mazandarani; Ayatollah Javad Fazel Lankarani; and several other senior and emerging jurists. Imam Mojtaba Khamenei is already followed in matters of taqlid by many people, and his scholarly position is expected to receive greater attention in the coming period.

The transition of the Marja’iyyah is therefore not necessarily a decline, but a natural process within a centuries-old scholarly tradition. As one generation passes away, another generation of jurists, teachers, researchers, and religious authorities emerges. The coming years will likely see new names introduced and established within the Marja’iyyah, ensuring the continuation of the Qom Hawza’s jurisprudential and intellectual tradition for future generations.
