Thomas Szasz claimed: "No behavior or misbehavior is a disease", and then he aimed it straight at ADHD and the millions of children diagnosed with it.
From there, he escalates:
"Diseases are malfunctions of the human body - of the heart, the liver, the kidney, the brain. It doesn't matter how a child behaves. There is nothing to examine."
"Labeling a child as mentally ill is stigmatization, not diagnosis. Giving a child a psychiatric drug is poisoning, not treatment."
He goes further still - claiming Ritalin is administered to children "often against the parents' will, and of course, it's always against the child's will. But nobody's asking the children."
Whether you agree or disagree, his claim forces three uncomfortable questions:
→ If ADHD is a disease, where is the objective test?
→ Why are children never consulted?
→ When does treatment become coercion?
Szasz may be polarizing. But his central challenge - that psychiatry can be misused, and that we should demand objective science before drugging children - deserves a serious conversation, not reflexive dismissal.
