Playing with Fire •Directed by Anneta Papathanassiou • 2014 • Afghanistan

Following six courageous Afghan women in Kabul with a passion for theatre and acting, Playing with Fire shows the comeback of the women at the forefront of the theatre arts and the trials that they must overcome for their art in Afghanistan. The inspiring and bold interviews with these women show how each of them combats not only the powerful forces of Islamic fundamentalism but also the violent Taliban and the patriarchal tradition of hostility toward women actors. Papathanassiou’s film provides an honest, strikingly unsentimental, and at times painful look at gender discrimination in a society that is ruled by men.
Playing with Fire depicts two parallels: one being a fearless record of women’s lives and the other the political trajectory of women’s rights in Afghanistan. This powerful portrait, above all, offers compelling evidence of the ongoing battle that women face every day and how they have become a powerful voice within a nation that is afflicted and tormented by patriarchy and war.

A Youth • Directed by Giorgio Bosisio • 2020 • Afghanistan

A Youth is a highly touching documentary that tells a story of displacement and assimilation. It follows a young man named Peyman, a fan of rap music and a rapper, who finds himself stuck in Athens while waiting to find asylum in Austria. The director makes use of fast cutting to show the instability, difficulty, and lack of security in the situation in which Peyman and his friends find themselves as they wander through the city. These qualities and the suffocating feeling of unrest all testify to the hardship of living as a refugee, people for whom the concept of home is constantly changing. Besides the poignant subject matter, the film’s visual aesthetics — with an incisive eye for landscape and nature — add new structure to the film, which is subtle in effect.

Overruled • Directed by Farnaz and Mohammadreza Jurabchian • 2016 • Afghanistan

Overruled follows four Afghan refugees who work as ball boys in Tehran’s tennis clubs. Eventually they become tennis players and instructors, but right before an upcoming tournament, these Afghan athletes are informed that they are not permitted to compete.

At points in the film, the two directors interview these young Afghan individuals to find out about their perilous journey from Afghanistan to Iran. They view each of the athletes’ personal experiences with much sensitivity and sharp observation, and in so doing the directors unravel fragments of the refugees’ lives and their haunting stories of displacement.

This film, above all else, is staunch in its critique of the immense amount of racism directed toward Afghan people in Iran. One example of this comes in a scene in which some of the Afghan players have been deprived of participating in matches due to their place of birth. Altogether, this film is a poignant reminder of the bigotry that lives strong in this claustrophobic society.

The Forbidden Strings • Directed by Hasan Noori • 2019 • Afghanistan

The Forbidden Strings follows four musicians named Soori, Akbar, Mohamad, and Hakim, who form the Afghan rock band Arikain in Iran. Hasan Noori accompanies them as they journey from Iran to Afghanistan to perform in their first concert. While traveling from Kabul to Bamiyan, they have no choice but to go by car, despite the possibility of being attacked by the Taliban. Noori carefully constructs the scenes in a way that explores how these young musicians survive in two different countries, the first of which has denied them their dream to hold a concert, and the second which is constantly on the brink of war. Despite the many obstacles the band members face, their love of music is never lost or forgotten.

The personal lives and musical aspirations of these young people intertwine and collide as they try to maintain equilibrium between the two. The film captures the relentless struggle and incredible amount of effort put in by each of them in order to be seen and heard. The Forbidden Strings is an honest and daring film that cannot help but engage its audience. The four musicians give moving performances, and the result is dazzling and unforgettable.

The Land of Champions • Directed by Maryam Ataei & Hossein Keshavarz

The Land of Champions explores one of Iran’s oldest and most traditional sports, which takes place at a “house of power.” This sport is accompanied by the beating of drums and traditional singing in the worship of God. It is, indeed, a mixture of vigorous exercise and the affirmation of faith. Its importance does not necessarily relate to the sport as such, but in practicing it, the athletes foster a culture of brotherhood and community. The ritual of this sport is based on respect and humanity, and in the ring where the athletes perform, there is always talk of God. Ataei and Keshavarz masterfully capture the essence of this sport, the philosophy behind it, and the history that surrounds it.

Double Feature: Fatherland

7 Veils • Directed by Sepideh Farsi • 2017 • Afghanistan

Sepideh Farsi’s 7 Veils is set in the culturally rich Afghanistan, a country that has been plagued by war and strife for many decades. In this film, Farsi takes a look at the ordinary people whose way of life remains difficult to understand for those living outside the country. Farsi’s goal is to lift up the veil that obscures the country’s true, compassionate heart, using images that are beautiful, aesthetically impressive, and transcendental.

From the experiences of a French ambassador; to the hardship of a political activist who has not been permitted to leave the country since 2013; to the words of a politician who discusses the role of the communist revolution in Afghanistan and its aftermath; to the American checkpoints in the city and the ongoing presence of soldiers, tanks, and helicopters; to the conversations with workers, veterans, taxi drivers, and the women who long for independence, this documentary is an unraveling, dizzying, and spectacular look at life in Afghanistan. It is a humane portrait of a country that longs to catch its breath amidst the lingering war.
