Double Feature: Fatherland

7 Veils (2) • Directed by Sepideh Farsi • 2017 • Afghanistan

Sepideh Farsi’s 7 Veils is set in the culturally rich Afghanistan, a country that has been plagued by war and strife for many decades. In this film, Farsi takes a look at the ordinary people whose way of life remains difficult to understand for those living outside the country. Farsi’s goal is to lift up the veil that obscures the country’s true, compassionate heart, using images that are beautiful, aesthetically impressive, and transcendental.

From the experiences of a French ambassador; to the hardship of a political activist who has not been permitted to leave the country since 2013; to the words of a politician who discusses the role of the communist revolution in Afghanistan and its aftermath; to the American checkpoints in the city and the ongoing presence of soldiers, tanks, and helicopters; to the conversations with workers, veterans, taxi drivers, and the women who long for independence, this documentary is an unraveling, dizzying, and spectacular look at life in Afghanistan. It is a humane portrait of a country that longs to catch its breath amidst the lingering war.
