We invite you to join a queer Ukrainian solidarity event with a film screening about the Ukrainian queer community during the war by @plisetskiy followed by a discussion, Ukrainian food, and music.

During the screening, we’re gonna show two movies from the ongoing trilogy, asking two important questions: What will you do if the war starts? And the more important one: What will you do if the war continues?

🍲 Throughout the evening, we’ll offer you Ukrainian food and will welcome you to enjoy the music with us.

All your donations are going to go to help Ukrainians in their resistance. Come to express your solidarity, ask questions, eat and dance with us.

We are thrilled to announce our next reading workshop led by İz Öztat. The session invites us to engage with excerpts from the forthcoming publication “We and I”, a long-form conversation that charts the writer and publisher Recep Maraşlı’s lifelong political struggle and principles from the 1970s onward. The workshop will take place on July 2nd, from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

As spots are limited and this is a full-day workshop, we kindly ask those interested to register in advance by June 30th by emailing library@circa106.info or contacting us via Instagram. This will help us prepare the space, materials, and lunch accordingly.

While Circa finally finds a new place, our living experiences have been playing out on a platform of generationally defining ‘human led’ catastrophes. 

Despair and damage inherently lead to widening cracks, but what do you find looking into the deep end? What comes to fore in shapes of light, in sounds that follow desolation, in going about life as we do here, in our current positions?

Circa invites you to Where does it go, when does it end?, a two-day programme and gathering to reactivate the new project space at Schildstr. 28, devising and drawing out everyday tools for forging purpose and stance into our daily routines.

As we bid farewell to Bismarckstraße 106, we have been busy behind the scenes, honouring our rhythms with the space and amongst ourselves with care. We are grateful, and thank you all for the solidarity, on ground support, mobilization, and unity that naturally took place around the fight against the unjust cancelation of Circa106.

Dear HfK-Community,

we know many of you may be familiar with, or even supportive of, the struggle surrounding Circa106. We are incredibly grateful for all of the presence and support shared along the way. More information on recent developments will follow soon. We are taking a moment to transition.

With this, we are excited to roll ahead and announce the screening of
„The Crowd” a film by Sahand Kabiri, followed by artist talk + discussion. This Thursday, 13th of February at 20:00 (open doors: 19:30).

The Crowd: Hamed hails from a well-off religious family, sharing a middle-class flat with Raman, who is set to emigrate in a few days. Raman is upset he cannot spend his last days with friends because they don't have an appropriate venue to gather. Hamed, determined to help, decides to throw a party in a vacant warehouse belonging to his family, but without alerting the other owners. However, he faces another dilemma: Their close friend, Tondar, recently passed away in an accident which they cannot talk about publicly.

Sahand Kabiri (1991) is a director and screenwriter based in Tehran. Kabiri pursued screenwriting studies at the Art University of Tehran. A nuanced depiction of gender relations in Iran, particularly among his own
generation, is a distinctive aspect of earlier works. Active in the Iranian film industry and in artistic communities, these works insist on making intelligible the lived experience of disparate cultural groups. In movies, Kabiri has explored representations of various communities in Iran.

Dearest Circa106 community,

Time has come again for a spirited gathering at Bismarkstraße 106, however, the situation is bleak and accompanied by a seemingly definitive decision. The shadows of termination always loomed over Circa106, making retrieval gatherings a yearly phenomenon. We have gone head first into the fight with authorities and irrespective of fate, we will get through to the other side with full passion and radical joy of what truly stands for internationality and communal representation, free from regressive influence.

We will continue to hope, to revel, resist and rejoice for all that Circa106 has shaped into. Bring all your spirits and presence to vigorously light up the project space at Bismarckstraße 106 on December 14 for a night of resistance. This gathering is a show of solidarity against what is nothing but a tyrannical attack on what made HfK truly international and diverse.

Dear all,

We have some news to relay to you. Our attempts at securing a legally binding vote to demand the continuation of Circa106 have come to a dead end.

For transparency we want to provide you with exactly what that means. There are 2 types of voting that students can conduct to make demands to the Rektorat. The first is called an “Urabstimmung” and the second is called a “Vollversammlung”. For both types of voting we need AStA’s full involvement in the process. AStA’s current team have provided us with their support in the General Student Assembly that happened on the 27th of November. After that meeting, we created a telegram chat of Circa team + AStA members who were willing to help. We also had several phone calls with AStA members trying to figure out what the next steps we could take are. We were told that there is disagreement within AStA on how to handle the cause of Circa and were directed to the mailbox of AStA Vorstand which is currently occupied by 2 people only on an interim basis. We wrote an email on 3.12 asking specific questions on how to conduct a legally binding vote of the non-legally binding one that we conducted in the General Assembly on 27.11 (which was unanimously supported by those present in the room). We got a reply the following day on 4.12 from the mailbox of the AStA Vorstand stating that their current response time per request is 2-3 weeks and that they can help us in creating a thread of conversation between us and the Rektorat and that they will respond to us with more information later.

Since we do not have the luxury of time in dealing with this cause, we leaned on the community of Circa and were able to secure a meeting with a previous member of Uni Bremen AStA, who kindly explained to us all the details that we couldn’t receive from HfK’s AStA. The person we met with explained to us that an Urabstimmung, is usually a process that takes around 6 months, and is conducted in cases like securing the Deutschlandsemesterticket for the student body. A Vollversammlung however, is more doable in a short amount of time. But, we cannot do it without AStA being present. As explained before, AStA’s internal disagreement and other commitments, such as organising a language course at this time of the year for integrating international students, prevents them from being readily available to support our needs as a student entity concerned with international students, that is being shut down for reasons, that we believe are unjust.

We wish we can come to you with better updates on the current situation. But this is what we have on our hands.

We are gathering on 12.12 on the 4th floor kitchen in Segment 11 to make some banners, have some food and drinks and DEMAND THE CONTINUATION OF THE RENTAL CONTRACT OF BISMARCKSTRAẞE FROM THE REKTORAT.

We want to tell you also, that in our meeting with the previous AStA member of Uni Bremen, we went through the Bremen Hochschulgesetz and we found out that students who organize a disturbing action in the school can face Exmatrikulation. Please understand that this is not a demo, but a mere gathering on the fourth floor, in which we share our thoughts and ideas with one another, lean on each other for support and show the responsible parties in the school that Circa106 matters to the student body.

Please show up peacefully and in numbers.
