Delivery of provisions and mail to Little Diomede Island (Kruzenshtern Island) is carried out by helicopter.

Despite being divided by a maritime border and belonging to two different nations, the people of Chukotka and Alaska share a bond that runs much deeper than politics. We are united by a harsh yet breathtaking nature, a similar way of life, and a resilient culture that has thrived in the Arctic for millennia.

But today, I want to talk about our common language—the language of dance.

Whether in the villages of Chukotka or the settlements of Alaska, our dances tell the same stories: the flight of a seagull, the breath of the blizzard, the rhythm of the drum echoing across the tundra. Historically, our peoples didn't live in isolation. Despite the distance, we visited each other, exchanged songs, and shared choreography. These trips created a unique cultural bridge, where a dance born in one village would find a second home across the Bering Strait.

Our movements are not just art; they are the memory of our ancestors and the heartbeat of the North. We may live in different countries, but when the drum starts to beat, there is no border between us.

Несмотря на то что Чукотку и Аляску разделяет государственная граница, нас, жителей Крайнего Севера, объединяет гораздо больше, чем политика. Это суровая, но завораживающая природа, схожий уклад жизни и уникальная культура, которая веками выживала в арктических условиях.

Но сегодня я хочу поговорить о нашем общем языке — языке танца.

И в чукотских селах, и на Аляске танцы рассказывают одни и те же истории: полет чайки, дыхание пурги, ритм бубна над тундрой. В свое время наши предки не жили замкнуто. Несмотря на расстояния, мы ездили друг к другу в гости, обменивались песнями и перенимали движения. Эти поездки создали уникальный культурный мост, где танец, рожденный в одном поселке, находил второй дом по ту сторону Берингова пролива.

Наши движения — это не просто искусство. Это память предков и пульс Севера. Мы живем в разных странах, но когда звучит бубен, границы для нас перестают существовать.

Beyond the Ordinary: Chukotka as I Never Knew It.

You'd think that living in the Northeast, you'd be used to harsh landscapes and endless expanses. But Chukotka can surprise even those who consider themselves locals. Before this trip, I had never visited the southern territories of our district — and, to be honest, I simply had no idea how completely different the nature there is.

We were among the first — my colleague Arseny Gusev (cameraman for GTRK Chukotka) and I — to visit the NUTEKI gold deposit. We spoke with the prospectors from Bering Gold and learned how gold is mined in such harsh conditions. But the most unexpected encounter awaited us right there — geologist John Mudiaga Eziri, originally from Lagos, Nigeria. Can you imagine? The guy has been living in Russia for 9 years, married a Russian woman in Krasnoyarsk Krai, and now works in Chukotka.

Next came the Khatyrka tundra and the reindeer herders' camps. We visited two camps of the Municipal Agricultural Enterprise "Khatyrka." Just think about it: more than 2,000 head of reindeer are herded by just 4 people! And sometimes — only two. This isn't a job; it's a way of life that demands centuries-old endurance and a true feel for nature.

And, of course, the Koryak Highlands. That's something else entirely. When you see those mountains in real life, it takes your breath away. They are completely different, nothing like the northern hills I see every day.

P.S. Unfortunately, we didn't see the reindeer — the helicopter could have scared them off, so the herders moved the herd to a safe distance in advance. But even without them, the atmosphere of that place was worth it!

Уэлен встречает лето во всей его короткой красе. Море открыто, и ветер уже не пахнет льдом, а пахнет солью и свободой. Солнечные дни здесь — как драгоценность: их мало, но каждый запоминается надолго.

Правда, погода сегодня с характером: утром +5⁰, а уже к обеду столбик ползет вверх к +10⁰. В отличие от прошлогоднего лета это холоднее. И все равно это лучшее время в году.

Ловим момент, пока он не уплыл вместе с туманом.
