A United States Army platoon commander has been temporarily relieved of duty after reportedly discouraging subordinates from voting in the November 2026 midterm election. The service member, a second lieutenant and recent West Point graduate, has not been formally charged. Because the inquiry remains active, his name and billet have not been released.
This month, the lieutenant, a platoon leader at a stateside installation, advised the platoon—privates, specialists, section sergeants, and the E-6 platoon sergeant—to forgo voting. He told them elites had already preordained which candidates would win and that casting a ballot was a fool’s errand, a palliative meant to deceive Americans into believing they hold real agency over which party controls Congress. The remarks came weeks before absentee deadlines and early voting for the midterms.
Several platoon members carried the comments to the unit’s Voting Assistance Officer. Every installation maintains such an officer, appointed by the battalion commander, to help soldiers and dependents register, request absentee ballots, and meet state deadlines with nonpartisan guidance. The officer took the matter to the company commander, who interviewed multiple soldiers, including the platoon sergeant. Those interviews affirmed the allegations. Summoned next, the lieutenant confessed that, in a moment of indiscretion, he had shared deeply held personal beliefs with the formation.
The company commander deferred to the battalion commander, who relieved the lieutenant while the Army Criminal Investigation Division takes the case. The Uniform Code of Military Justice has no article that specifically criminalizes voter suppression, yet accused service members can still face existing articles. Article 92 covers failure to obey an order or regulation. Article 134, the catch-all statute, reaches conduct that prejudices good order and discipline or discredits the Armed Forces. Clause 3 of Article 134 lets the services absorb certain federal offenses not named in the code.
Whether the lieutenant has retained counsel is not known. Relief is temporary pending the CID review.
