🌟Страновед в олимпиадах по английскому🌟

Country Studies is a recurring nightmare for many English Olympiad takers. 👿 While the main preparation for the Olympiads consists of solving grammar books and learning many small snippets of information (like spelling or word definitions), Country Studies requires you to learn narratives.

🫂 What do I mean by narratives?

Narratives are stories - not algorithms of solving crosswords or a plethora of vocabulary items. The main reason why English learners can't master this part of the Olympiad is because they don't realise that they need to 'rewire' their brains to remember events and personalities in the form of stories. This should be done in addition to learning grammar rules and meanings of idioms.

🍵 Un petit storytime

Drawing on my own experience, I noticed that preparing for the Social Studies Olympiad in my second year was of immense help, as I had to adapt my mind to understanding systems, processes and narratives, like industrialization or political regimes, instead of learning grammatical constructions. This was helpful, as I did much better in the Country Studies part of the final stage of ВсОШ that year and ultimately won the Olympiad.


Чтобы облегчить вашу жизнь и показать, что страновед может быть вполне осязаемым и понятным, я создала серию карточек, посвященных различным авторам Викторианской эпохи (1837 – 1901). 🦌

What you can do with them:
1️⃣ memorise the names of the authors and their approximate years of life (you don't have to learn the dates by heart, but be ready to name the century)
2️⃣ remember what their main works are
3️⃣ search up on the Internet what those books were about and remember the approximate summaries
4️⃣ know what kind of social environment the authors created their works in (did they address some contemporary issues in their novels?)
5️⃣ write it down, if that helps you remember who they were


🩰 Why is this important?

Такой маленький рисерч может очень сильно вам помочь на всех этапах ВсОШ, а также в перечневых олимпиадах. Самый популярный формат страноведа - соотношение личностей/книг/блюд/достопримечательностей/whatnot с их описанием. Поэтому, чем больше вы знаете различных деталей о культуре и истории Британии и Америки - тем лучше, так как очень трудно предсказать, что именно попадется на листке с заданием.
