From the "Philosophical Parables" section
Once upon a time, David Chalmers decided to philosophically reflect on life on Mars.
His reasoning was very logical:
Even if there is life on Mars, there is no guarantee that it will lead to the emergence of consciousness. And that is a very hard problem.
On the other hand, if there is no life on Mars, does that mean there is no consciousness there? Of course, it doesn’t.
And if there is neither life nor consciousness on Mars, what is there? Both life and consciousness could exist there as potential possibilities. Life = 0. Consciousness = 0.
More precisely, {life, consciousness} = {0,0}.
That explained a lot.
