🇲🇲🇲🇾 Malaysia Returns Myanmar Migrants
Nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals were returned from Malaysia to Myanmar on Oct 4 under a repatriation plan, with Myanmar Navy ships docking near Thanlyin and returnees transferred for immigration and health checks. The first batch arrived as rights monitors raised concerns over safety and voluntary consent for those sent back.
The returns come despite UN warnings that conditions in Myanmar, which has been in civil war since the 2021 military coup, do not allow safe homecomings to be guaranteed under international law. Malaysia says the migrants agreed to voluntary repatriation from detention centres, but UN and rights groups say detainees may have had little real choice, while families fear conscription and persecution upon return.
Malaysia plans further returns, citing social and security burdens from undocumented migrants. The case adds pressure to regional handling of migration during Myanmar’s prolonged internal conflict.
