🇨🇳🇯🇵 China, Japan Deputies Hold Brief Talk

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said vice minister Shuji Miyamoto briefly spoke with China’s vice commerce minister and trade negotiator Li Chenggang during the G20 trade ministers’ meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The exchange took place on the sidelines of the Sept 30-Oct 1 meeting and covered bilateral economic ties, including China’s export control measures.

Japanese media said approval delays have emerged in some cases involving China’s rare earth exports to Japan, amid a broader cooling in bilateral ties. High-level China-Japan exchanges have largely stalled since remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi last November on a Taiwan contingency, while Tokyo has repeatedly reported only brief contacts with Chinese officials at multilateral forums.

Beijing has not confirmed several of these reported exchanges. Similar brief contacts were also reported by Japanese officials at APEC and ASEAN-linked meetings earlier this year.
