🇺🇸🇨🇳 Trump-Xi summits favor optics

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington after their third in-person meeting since Trump returned to office in 2025. As the visit concluded, the two sides produced no major breakthroughs, while U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a two-month extension of the bilateral trade truce to Jan. 10.

The latest engagement pointed to a shared priority on keeping U.S.-China ties stable through frequent leader-level contact rather than pursuing major deals. The extended truce preserves a pause on new Chinese export controls on rare earths and appears calibrated to carry the current detente through possible additional Trump-Xi meetings at the APEC summit in Shenzhen and the G20 in Miami later this year.

The timetable leaves open renewed friction in 2027, with underlying disputes unresolved and U.S. officials reportedly concerned that Beijing has not fully restored rare earth flows. Domestic political pressure on Trump ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections also appears to be constraining sharper moves toward China.
