🇺🇸🇨🇳 US Reaffirms Taiwan Policy

US Ambassador to China David Perdue said on Sept. 25 that Washington’s Taiwan policy has not changed, reiterating in a CNBC appearance that the Trump administration remains committed to the one-China policy, the Taiwan Relations Act, the three US-China joint communiques, and the Six Assurances. He also said the US does not support independence, opposes coercion, and wants peace in the Taiwan Strait.

The remarks came after Xi Jinping and Donald Trump met at the White House on Sept. 24, with Taiwan one of the main points under scrutiny. Perdue said Beijing had tried to push the US to alter its position, but Washington would not change its wording or stance; Xi, for his part, urged the US to maintain opposition to Taiwan independence and handle the issue prudently.

Trump has not publicly responded to Xi’s remarks. The exchange indicates Taiwan remains a central friction point in broader US-China strategic relations.
