It's a challenge that no one understands Russian and you have to speak only English. And you solve all problems only in English.
Lesya, my student, told me. She traveled to Madeira - a Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike Turkey, nobody speaks Russian there. People from Portugal, South Africa, and European retirees all communicate in English.
So, Lesya had to do everything in English. Book tours. Listen to excursions and translate them for her husband. Buy fruit at the local market and even make compliments to people in the streets.
She mastered this challenge gracefully.
As a reward, she enjoyed stunning views (even compared to her trip to Iceland), swam in the lava swimming pool (it's salty) and tried exotic fruits (they're sweet. shockingly sweet. They're sweeter than sweets!)
My hat's off to you Lesya! And thanks for your permission to share this story and photos of Madeira ✨
