Electroplating the Dead - illustration from the "Scientific American", 1891.

The original text:
.... "Dr Varlot, a surgeon in a major hospital in Paris, has developed a method of covering the body of a deceased person with a layer of metal in order to preserve it for eternity. The drawing illustrates how this is done with the cadaver of a child. The body is first made electrically conductive by atomising nitrate of silver on to it. To free the silver in this solution, the object is placed under a glass dome from which the air is evacuated and exposed to the vapours of white phosphorous dissolved in carbon disulphide. Having been made conductive, the body is immersed in a galvanic bath of sulphate of copper, thus causing a 1 millimetre thick layer of metallic copper to be deposited on the skin. The result is a brilliant red copper finish of exceptional strength and durability."...

Does a magnetic mountain, with a circumference of 33 French miles, that extends all the way to the clouds, still persist at the North Pole in the present day?

Mercator described the island (Hyperborea) in a letter dated 1577, addressed to John Dee, an English mathematician, astronomer and astrologer:

"...In the midst of the four countries is a Whirl-pool, into which there empty these four indrawing Seas which divide the North. And the water rushes round and descends into the Earth just as if one were pouring it through a filter funnel. It is four degrees wide on every side of the Pole, that is to say eight degrees altogether. Except that right under the Pole there lies a bare Rock in the midst of the Sea. Its circumference is almost 33 French miles, and it is all of magnetic Stone...". Taylor, E.G.R. (1956). "A Letter Dated 1577 from Mercator to John Dee". Imago Mundi. 13: 56–68.

Dragons, magical islands, gigantic snail shells, mysterious lakes, centaurs, and strange kinds of humanoids.

These are not scenes from a modern fantasy novel, but illuminations from an old manuscript created around 1485, Les secretz de l’histoire naturelle (The Secrets of Natural History), by the French illuminator Robert Testard.

The manuscript, now preserved in the French National Library under the designation Français 22971, represents a fascinating catalogue of what the medieval man recorded about the wonders of the natural world.

Although they appear to us today as fantasy, to the people of that time, these descriptions were part of their everyday reality.
