🇪🇷🇪🇹 Eritrea maintains large military as tensions with Ethiopia rise

Eritrea under President Isaias Afwerki continues to maintain an unusually large military relative to its population, sustained by decades of compulsory conscription and national service, as tensions with neighbouring Ethiopia fuel concerns over a possible new conflict. The issue has drawn renewed attention amid strains between Asmara and Addis Ababa despite a meeting between Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Asmara on 10 October 2024.
