🇨🇩 DRC Ebola outbreak passes 9,000 cases and 4,000 deaths
DR Congo’s worst ever Ebola outbreak has passed 9,000 cases and more than 4,000 deaths, health authorities said on Tuesday. The country’s 17th Ebola outbreak was declared in mid-May after starting in Ituri province in northeastern DRC, and has since spread to seven provinces in the north and east.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment. The World Health Organization said a clinical trial for a vaccine is scheduled to launch in the DRC this month, while limited healthcare resources, armed groups and distrust from some local communities have complicated the response.
