🇳🇬 Nigerian opposition splits ahead of 2027 vote against Tinubu
Nigeria’s opposition has fractured ahead of the 16 January 2027 presidential election, despite an earlier attempt by the leading 2023 challengers to unite against President Bola Tinubu. Former vice president Atiku Abubakar, 80, secured the African Democratic Congress ticket and chose former transport minister Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate, while Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso joined the new National Democratic Congress as presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Tinubu is seeking re-election with Vice President Kashim Shettima after winning 36.6% of the vote in 2023, ahead of Abubakar on 29.07%, Obi on 25.4%, and Kwankwaso on 6.23%.
On 12 September, the Independent National Electoral Commission published a list of 18 presidential candidates. Opposition campaigns have focused on hardship linked to Tinubu’s fuel subsidy removal and naira float, while the government says the reforms were necessary and need more time to deliver results.
