🇪🇹 Fighting erupts in Ethiopia’s Tigray as truce faces collapse

Fighting has broken out in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region between federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, with clashes this week spreading into the neighbouring Afar and Amhara regions. TPLF forces have been patrolling the streets of Mekelle, while residents have reported panic buying and disruptions to internet and call services, cutting access to digital payments in a region where ATMs had already stopped working months ago.

The escalation follows more than six months of worsening relations despite the African Union-brokered Pretoria Agreement of November 2022, which ended a two-year war that the AU mediator said killed about 600,000 people. The TPLF says it is responding to a federal offensive including drone strikes, while the government says Tigrayan forces triggered the latest violence after seizing airports in Tigray.
