🇺🇸🌍 Washington retreats from African priorities at the UN General Assembly

World leaders are gathering in New York this week for the UN General Assembly, where Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is set to become the first African official to address the high-level General Debate on Tuesday, while Mauritius will speak last among African states on 28 September. The session will also feature lobbying by seven remaining candidates to replace UN Secretary-General António Guterres next year, with Senegal’s Macky Sall and Uganda’s Olara Otunnu trailing Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan and Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett in Security Council straw polling.

The week will also mark the debut of Guterres’s new UN Africa leadership team, led by former Kenyan envoy Martin Kimani as Assistant Secretary-General for Africa and Nigeria’s Ahunna Eziakonwa as Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa. Michelle Bachelet of Chile withdrew from the secretary-general race on 20 September after opposition from the administration of US President Donald Trump.
