😜 Writing the Results Section in Qualitative Research #useful
Unlike quantitative papers that rely on charts and p-values, the Results section of a qualitative research project (based on interviews, case studies, or text analysis) is built around text and patterns.
The main goal of this section is to present your findings objectively, without interpreting them yet (interpretation belongs to the Discussion section).
1️⃣ Structure by Themes, Not by Participants
The most common mistake is presenting results participant by participant (e.g., What Expert 1 said, then what Expert 2 said). This makes the text repetitive.
The Academic Standard: Group your findings by the major themes or codes discovered during your analysis. Each theme should be a separate subsection.
2️⃣The Formula for Presenting a Finding
For every theme you present, follow a strict three-step sequence:
⏺The Statement: State the pattern or finding clearly.
⏺The Proof: Provide evidence using a direct, high-quality quote from your transcript or document.
⏺The Explanation: Explain exactly what the quote demonstrates in relation to your theme.
Example: The data revealed a consistent deficit in student motivation during remote instruction. Participant B emphasized this shift, stating, "It was nearly impossible to maintain focus when looking at a screen for six hours." This directly supports the claim that physical isolation impacts engagement metrics.
3️⃣ Rules for Using Direct Quotes
🌷Be Selective: Do not use long blocks of text. Choose only the most impactful sentences that perfectly illustrate your point.
🌷Integrate Smoothly: Short quotes should be integrated directly into your sentence using quotation marks. Long quotes (more than 40 words) should be separated into a blockquote with an indent.
🌷Anonymity: Always use your coding system (Participant A, School X) to protect identities.
4️⃣ Keep It Objective
Do not use emotional language or make broad generalizations that your data cannot support.
🌷 Incorrect: All teachers were completely devastated by the new policy.
🌷 Correct: Three out of five interviewed educators expressed negative feedback regarding the implementation timeline of the new policy.
The Golden Rule: The Results section answers the question "What did you find?". Save the explanation of "Why does this matter?" for the next chapter.
