⚙️ Academic Rule #7
Don’t just present evidence — explain its meaning.
One of the most common weaknesses in academic writing is the tendency to rely on evidence without proper analysis.
Students often assume that including statistics, studies, or expert opinions is enough to make an argument convincing. However, evidence alone does not communicate significance.
In academic writing, the role of evidence is not to replace your thinking, but to support it. If a paragraph consists mainly of statements such as “research shows…” or “studies indicate…”, it often becomes descriptive rather than analytical.
The reader is left with information, but without understanding why it matters or how it connects to the main argument.
💔Strong writing requires interpretation. After presenting evidence, the writer must clarify its meaning, explain its implications, and explicitly link it back to the research question or thesis. This step transforms information into argument. Without it, even the most credible sources lose their impact.
In practice, this means that every piece of evidence should be followed by explanation. What does this result demonstrate? Why is it important in this context? How does it support or challenge the central claim? Answering these questions ensures that the writer’s voice remains dominant throughout the text.
🐟Ultimately, academic writing is not about collecting information, but about making sense of it. Evidence provides the foundation, but analysis is what builds the argument.
