š°š² Earliest AustronesianāAfrican mixing in the Swahili world
Genomes from coastal Kenya, the Comoros, and regional references show a Bantu-based continuum along the Swahili Corridor. Whatās different in the Comoros is a clear Austronesian signal: Comorian groups carry about 8ā9% Island Southeast Asian ancestry and ~6ā7% Middle Eastern ancestry, whereas Kenyan Swahili in this dataset are essentially African.
Dating points to the Comoros as the first gateway, with AustronesianāAfrican admixture starting in the 8th century, predating Madagascarās major pulse in the 11thā12th centuries. Sex-biased patterns in the Comoros fit the history: female-biased African and Asian inputs alongside a male-biased Middle Eastern trickle.
Takeaway: The Comoros mark the earliest Austronesian gene flow into the Swahili Corridor, adding a small but telling Asian layer onto a predominantly Bantu genetic base.
