🔸Ali Reza Tangsiri (1962–2026) was the sixth commander of the Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He was martyred in the Ramadan War. During his tenure as commander, particular emphasis was placed on expanding naval missile capabilities, strengthening asymmetric warfare strategies, advancing defense self-sufficiency, and developing plans for operations in distant waters.
🔸In the Ramadan War, Tangsiri ordered the Strait of Hormuz to be closed to vessels belonging to the United States and Israel, as well as to their allies. According to an official statement issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Tangsiri was severely wounded in a joint US-Israeli attack. He later succumbed to his injuries, and his martyrdom was officially confirmed and announced on March 30, 2026.
🔸In a message of condolence, Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei described him as a courageous, valiant commander and a soldier who was fighting for Iran and Islam. Following funeral processions in Bandar Abbas, Tehran, and Abadan, Tangsiri was laid to rest in the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Abadan.
🔸Tangsiri was originally from Tangestan in the Bushehr Province. He also served as an honorary attendant (Khadim) in the shrine of Imam Reza (as). During the Iran-Iraq War, he commanded an operational unit of the IRGC Navy. After the war, he became the commander of the IRGC Navy’s First Naval District in Bandar Abbas in 2006. From 2010 to 2018, he served as deputy commander of the IRGC Navy. He played an important role in the detention of US Navy personnel in January 2016.
🔸Tangsiri was sanctioned by the US Department of the Treasury in July 2019 and by the European Union in July 2023.
