🇮🇳 INS VIKRANT — “MADE IN INDIA” OR FLOATING DEPENDENCY?
— India’s INS Vikrant is hailed as a symbol of indigenous pride yet the truth beneath the steel is far less “Atmanirbhar.”
According to The Wire (03 Sep 2022), nearly 70% of the carrier’s high-value “fight” and “move” systems are imported.
🔹 Major Imported Systems:
• Engines – General Electric (USA):Four LM2500 gas turbines power the ship. Vital propulsion and energy systems, all American-made.
• Gearbox & Transmission –RENK AG (Germany):The mechanical bridge between turbines and shafts, one failure here can immobilize the entire ship.
• Aviation & STOBAR Systems (UK, Italy & Russia):The ski-jump, arresting gears, and deck handling systems all rely on foreign designs and technology.
• Radar & Sensors – IAI Elta (Israel):Primary surveillance, navigation, and landing aids sourced from Israel; the “eyes” of the carrier remain imported.
• Weapon Systems – Israel & Russia:Close-in weapons, air-defense, and fire-control suites integrate Israeli and Russian systems.
Even the light-signaling system was installed by a Russian firm (Aerosvet, 25 Aug 2021), and digital control for gas turbines is provided by GE (Naval News, 13 Feb 2023).
🔹 Operational Reality Such deep foreign dependence makes Vikrant vulnerable to supply-chain disruption and embargo risk.If a single OEM withholds spares or software support, the carrier’s readiness collapses.During Op Sindoor, the Indian Navy kept Vikrant docked at Karwar, reflecting caution over reliability and risk exposure.
🔹 Strategic Truth India’s “indigenization” remains skin-deep the platform is built locally, but sustained internationally. In the missile-saturated Indo-Pacific, a 45,000-ton carrier with imported systems and limited escort support is more symbolic prestige than combat assurance.
