Nine people, including two children, were killed in Erie, Pennsylvania on Friday evening. A man shot two women outside a house on Perry Street, then went inside. When police finally entered, everyone was already dead — including the shooter, who had an apparent self-inflicted wound. The city later confirmed all nine deaths happened before officers arrived.

Day two. The national vans are still on Perry Street but starting to pack. By Monday this street will just be background for the usual “thoughts and prayers” and “my heart breaks” lines before the politicians leave for the next fundraiser. The neighbors here will be picking up the pieces for years.
