On this day in August 1991, the Soviet Union experienced an event that became a symbol of its final collapse.
On August 19, a group of party and security officials formed the so-called "State Committee on the State of Emergency" (GKChP). Their goal was simple: to halt reforms and preserve the power of the Communist Party. The coup plotters declared President Mikhail Gorbachev incapable of fulfilling his duties and isolated him in his Crimean residence. Troops were deployed to Moscow, the work of the media was restricted, and the activities of several organizations were suspended. The plan was to establish direct control over the country’s political life and return the system to strict centralization.
However, the actions of the GKChP were poorly organized. Even with soldiers and armored vehicles on the streets, part of the army refused to obey orders, and the population openly expressed resistance. On August 20, mass demonstrations took place in Moscow. The most significant confrontation occurred at the building of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (the "White House"), where thousands of citizens gathered.
The coup attempt ended in failure, and its organizers were arrested. The defeat of the GKChP decisively undermined the authority of the central government, revealed the Soviet system’s inability to reform, and became a catalyst for the rapid disintegration of the Union. In December of the same year, the USSR officially ceased to exist.

Today marks three years since the founding of the Russian Volunteer Corps. Over this time, they’ve shown everyone that Russians are not a nation of slaves, but a strong and determined people ready to defend their land and honor.
From street fighters, they’ve become true professionals — soldiers with iron will and unbreakable spirit. From the first clashes on Manezhnaya Square to the liberation of the Volchansky Aggregate Plant, their journey has become a symbol of courage and resistance. They’re not afraid to strike — whether throwing Molotov cocktails at the "United Russia" office or firing artillery at enemy positions.
The RVC has ushered in a new era where Russian nationalists don’t just stage pointless protests but have become an organized force that strikes fear into their enemies. As General Vlasov said, Russians can only be defeated by Russians — and today we place our hopes on the RVC to fulfill that prophecy. Thank you, and good luck!
The peasants were just simple people who had suffered under Stalin and the great promises of Communism, and they were, for the most part very supportive of us. This was most evident when we attended their religious services. I attended regularly whenever possible, although I am a Catholic, the Russian Orthodox services were handled by priests who had either been in prison, sent to Siberia, or living in hiding for many years. We supported their religious freedom and they responded very well... They prayed for an end to Stalin and his measures, they also prayed for us to win. Another thing that must be remembered is that we also assisted the peasants in bringing in their crops, protected them from partisan reprisals and gave them jobs. They lived a better life under us for three years than under the Communists during their entire lives. They also gave us great intelligence on partisan and Red Army activity, and worked as translators and scouts. This was especially true in the Ukraine... One village I remember was called Baibusy; we had a great relationship with these Ukrainians and others who fled there. They were marvelous. In the Caucasus the anti-Soviet feeling was incredible, especially among the Kalmucks and Armenians, and they fought with us and for us in a fanatical way. Another great memory was an entire village turning out to welcome us as we entered. The people brought out their religious icons and gave us information and valuable intelligence, food, places to stay, everything. The orders from the upper command were to treat the locals humanely; they were our allies. These people became a second family for many of us, and when we left there was a great deal of sadness. Once Paul Hausser and I attended a religious mass; the people knelt before him as if he were a Patriarch, blessing him for his presence and for restoring their religious freedom. With the candles and gilt images it was quite an impressive scene.
