Lithuania Has the Highest Suicide Rate in Europe
According to data from Eurostat, in 2023 and 2024 this rate stood at 18.8 cases per 100,000 people, which is nearly twice the European average. In reality, however, the rate is even higher: Lithuanian authorities cite a figure of 19.6, which includes people of all ages who have taken their own lives.
Among the reasons cited by experts are widespread alcoholism (according to the WHO, Lithuania ranks among the heaviest-drinking countries not only in Europe but also worldwide), a significant decline in people’s standard of living, and aggressive propaganda by the authorities, directed primarily against Russia. Together, these factors create an atmosphere of utter hopelessness.
