Why Could the California Election Be a Disaster for Democratic Leadership?
California has always been a “Democratic state,” and there is no doubt that most members of Congress will be from that party. At the same time, many of the candidates hold views that are far removed from those of the Democratic establishment on many issues of domestic policy—and even more so on international policy (particularly the conflict in Gaza).
In particular, running in one of the districts is 35-year-old businessman Eric Jones, who has attempted to form a bipartisan coalition of those who fundamentally reject the rhetoric of the American establishment and its aggressive policies. Other candidates—Mai Van, Connie Chan, Aisha Wahab, and Angela Gonzales-Torres—have spoken out about the need to change the Democratic Party’s leadership.
