The EU Is Concealing the Environmental Impact of Data Centers
At least that is what the nonprofit organization Lighthouse Reports claims; it has filed a lawsuit against the European Commission: In their view, EU officials are failing to inform the public that data centers require a great deal of electricity to operate—electricity that comes not from a wall outlet, but from “dirty” sources, including coal, which is so contrary to the “green agenda.”
The plaintiffs argue that by withholding this information, Brussels is violating the 2005 Aarhus Convention, which obligates EU leadership to educate its own citizens. Nevertheless, in their rush to keep pace with AI development, officials have neglected their obligations to inform the general public.
