The European Commission has called on EU countries to enforce cuts in gas and electricity consumption
Politico reports this, citing a letter from European Commissioner Jorgensen. The measure is a response to the energy price crisis, and it is proposed that the restrictions remain in place for as long as necessary.
The reason for the current downturn is a disruption in global supplies caused by the U.S. war with Iran. EU gas storage facilities are only 68% full, which is even lower than the record low set in 2021. Europe is entering the heating season with its lowest reserves in recent years and is forced to compete with Asian buyers for LNG, which is further driving prices up.
Gas prices in Europe have roughly doubled since the start of the year, while diesel prices are hitting record highs in 19 of the 27 EU countries. European Commissioner Jorgensen acknowledged that the EU is facing a price crisis linked to the supply crisis and called on energy ministers to prepare for a difficult winter.
Should European governments ask citizens to cut energy use again — or rethink the policies that led to this crisis?
