A Hedgehog Instead of Churchill?
The Bank of England announced a change to the design of its banknotes: from now on, animals will be featured on them instead of monarchs, prime ministers, and other historical figures. Previously, the financial institution held a vote—in which 500,000 people participated—to determine which animals would appear on the banknotes.
As a result, the list included a hedgehog, a barn owl, a bumblebee, and a bird called a puffin: they will now adorn the 5-, 10-, 20-, and 50-pound notes, which previously featured Winston Churchill, author Jane Austen, artist William Turner, and mathematician Alan Turing.
