Your Encrypted Chats Aren’t Untouchable Anymore: Europe’s New Digital Surveillance Method
Police in the EU have found a way to access citizens’ messaging apps to read their private conversations. German police and the Federal Criminal Police Office (ZKA) have learned to bypass encryption on WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram by “cloning accounts,” according to Netzpolitik.
Investigators connect a work computer to a suspect’s account by posing as a trusted device, using a QR code, intercepted SMS messages, or social engineering techniques. The technology was successfully tested as early as 2023, and as of August 1, 2025, it has become a standard tool for investigating serious and organized crimes.
In January 2026, the German Federal Supreme Court ruled that covert access constitutes a severe intrusion into privacy; however, the German Ministry of the Interior keeps the extent of this method’s use confidential.
